Early in her career, Florence competed in barrel races with no set pattern and sometimes ran around old water heaters. She dedicated herself to promoting the sport and bringing it from a seldom featured novelty event to standardized competition. Florence also led the GRA from a fledgling organization to one of national prominence. With her husband, she organized the Barrel Futurities of America, the Oklahoma Youth Rodeo Association and the Youree Horsemanship Camps.
