2019 Inductee Laura Wilson Will Open an Exhibition at the National Cowgirl Museum

FORT WORTH, TEXAS (Sept. 17, 2019) – The National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame is pleased to present Laura Wilson: Looking West, a new exhibition by incoming 2019 Hall of Fame Inductee Laura Wilson. The exhibition will open in the Anne W. Marion Gallery.
Wilson has looked West for most of her life. Her photographic career is firmly planted in this region of America. Her concerns are with the contemporary currents and time-honored traditions of the West. From the Hutterites of Montana to the cowboys of West Texas, from rodeo trick riders to mountain lion hunters and road signs, this collection offers a glimpse into Wilson’s photographic vision.
As a new Inductee, she will join four other women being inducted into the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame on Nov. 13 during the Induction Luncheon and Ceremony.
“First of all, I want to say how thrilled I am to be inducted into the Cowgirl Hall of Fame,” said Wilson. “I feel it’s an honor even to be considered, and an incredible honor to join such a distinguished group of women – all your Honorees – who have shaped the West throughout the years.”
The Laura Wilson: Looking West exhibition will be on display during this year’s Induction festivities.
“I feel doubly lucky to have the opportunity for my work to be seen in your beautiful Anne W. Marion Gallery,” said Wilson.
Her work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, GQ Magazine, English Vogue, London’s Sunday Times Magazine, The Washington Post Magazine and Wallpaper. Her award-winning photography and books, multiple photographic exhibitions and countless newspaper and magazine articles attest to the ruggedness and individuality of people within the American West.
The Museum’s Associate Executive Director Dr. Diana Vela said the Museum is excited and honored to be inducting Wilson this year, along with hosting her exhibition.
“There is an intimacy and intensity in Laura Wilson’s photographs of the West that make her work a particularly good fit for the Museum,” said Dr. Vela. “Her photographs often reveal everyday moments that pass by unexamined, yet her images slow down that moment and allow us a glimpse inside.”
From her early days working with Richard Avedon on his American West project, to her current interest in documenting the work of mountain lion hunters in Arizona, Wilson’s photographic career has been wide-ranging and far-reaching but always rooted in the West: its land, its traditions and its people.

Friday, December 14, 2007— Dallas photographer Laura Wilson whose work has appeared in Vanity Fair, Texas Monthly and numerous other publications is the author and photographer of Watt Matthews of Lambshead, a book about the legendary Texas rancher.
