FORT WORTH, TEXAS (March 21, 2022) – Due to unprecedented visitorship, the National Cowgirl Museum & Hall of Fame and the Fort Worth Film Commission are pleased to announce that 1883: The Journey West will be held over until April 17th. Visitors are able to get up close with props, costumes and photography from the record-breaking Paramount+ series 1883. 1883: The Journey West was created by the museum in partnership with 101 Studios, Visit Fort Worth and the Fort Worth Film Commission.
101 Studios, the studio responsible for 1883 and Yellowstone, curated items for the exhibition including an authentic wagon, a camp set-up and wardrobe worn by Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Sam Elliott and LaMonica Garrett along with behind-the-scenes photography.
The exhibition also includes beaded items from National Cowgirl Museum Hall of Fame Honoree Cathy A. Smith, an artist dedicated to preserving the history of the 19th century cowboy and cowgirl and the Plains Indians. Smith’s original craftwork was featured as part of the costuming for the Lakota, Crow, and
Comanche tribes in 1883. Her work has been featured in over 35 Western films including Dances with Wolves, Comanche Moon and Geronimo.
“This exhibition has been unbelievably popular. Many visitors who live locally are visiting the Museum for the first time. Not only are they able to see a behind-the-scenes look at the making of 1883, the Paramount + series, but they are also able to experience our one-of-a-kind exhibitions that reflect western history, pioneers and trailblazers. Since the exhibition’s opening, the Museum has experienced over a 200% percent increase in visitors over the same time period in previous years. They are coming to see 1883: The Journey West,” said Associate Executive Director Dr. Diana Vela.
Filming for 1883 took place in Fort Worth and surrounding areas from July to October of 2021. The show employed hundreds of local production crew and extras, used local businesses and heavily featured locations like the Fort Worth Stockyards.
“We are thrilled with the number of locals and out of town visitors experiencing the 1883: The Journey West,” said Jessica Christopherson, Vice President of Marketing and Film Commissioner for Visit Fort Worth and the Fort Worth Film Commission. “Film and television production in Fort Worth provides an opportunity to drive tourism to our city and we are proud to partner with 101 Studios and the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame to extend the exhibition through April.
1883 was written and directed by Fort Worth native, Taylor Sheridan. Sheridan, is also known
for Yellowstone, Sicario, Hell or Highwater, Wind River and more. Nicole Sheridan, the wife of Taylor Sheridan, is on the Board of Directors for the Museum, and both she and the President of the Board, Kit Moncrief conceived the idea for the exhibition.
