Immigrating from Scotland, Elizabeth “Aunt Hank” followed her brothers to West Texas where she met and married Henry Smith. The first white woman to establish a home on the plains of West Texas, she and her husband also opened the Occidental Hotel, the Texas plains’ first hotel. She also taught at its first school. Aunt Hank became doctor and nurse, school teacher, postmistress, hostess and cook to any that crossed her threshold.
