Reine Hafley Shelton

(1902-1979)

Year Inducted: 1983

Home State: TX

Reine made her vaudeville debut at 3 as part of her mother's sharpshooting act. She broke new ground for women, successfully competing in relay races, trick and bronc riding and roping events, usually beating the men. Reine taught Tad Lucas trick riding when they both toured with Wild West shows. She rode in the first Madison Square Garden Rodeo. Her trademark stunt had her appearing to fall from her horse's hips, then straightening to a tail stand.
